This year, I attended with my friend Tori and we decided to go Disney's Hollywood Studios. Naturally, as Star Wars fans, we wanted our outfits to somehow tie into the theming of Galaxy's Edge. After brainstorming, we settled on styling outfits that are inspired by the outfits that cast members wear in Batuu. We had such a great day getting dressed up and taking photos throughout Black Spire Outpost. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; I finished it for a test run in December 2021 to wear at Emerald City Comic Con and then made a few small improvements for Star Wars Celebration Anaheim in May. I had the best time wearing it that weekend! Huge thanks to Wes Ellis for these fantastic photos and to Arturo Delgado for joining the fun in his Jango Fett costume. </p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj42KROrwfvAUzIviY0aKKSdlRUaWOOLASxb6VZHcmvqSvva_psdVRuepFU26EUOBc-iaFAgLQZPmu3B4v3jnklgoUEuebLvP_SdhfSMvy0oioB96QcGeDdsxOsrTs-o_XEGkWkCj-4IMwetf2W4WaxiuCiaBW8_Vk8tR-S5qQgpcOQy9QWdzvyz12S9Q/s2048/FT3coRvUcAAm7yx.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1466" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj42KROrwfvAUzIviY0aKKSdlRUaWOOLASxb6VZHcmvqSvva_psdVRuepFU26EUOBc-iaFAgLQZPmu3B4v3jnklgoUEuebLvP_SdhfSMvy0oioB96QcGeDdsxOsrTs-o_XEGkWkCj-4IMwetf2W4WaxiuCiaBW8_Vk8tR-S5qQgpcOQy9QWdzvyz12S9Q/s16000/FT3coRvUcAAm7yx.jpeg" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYiHo2WDHU_YnNxxZ12vtHJvyK_eYGJEGACkxW9YpxhjfC_2c-oGdoAsuEpYN_Hdlr2NNiquQ-x9lkLPJBuYQ96lxa5GtKjWgNzTrhVcDHAmaOK3oNg6KTjm0meFWX-Vd-Gsreqibf63OYCMjcN-TebqF4Xa1ZZlfMHFjOD3_pS9KVyQTJpnEV039O_Q/s2436/SWCA-1513.JPEG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1625" data-original-width="2436" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYiHo2WDHU_YnNxxZ12vtHJvyK_eYGJEGACkxW9YpxhjfC_2c-oGdoAsuEpYN_Hdlr2NNiquQ-x9lkLPJBuYQ96lxa5GtKjWgNzTrhVcDHAmaOK3oNg6KTjm0meFWX-Vd-Gsreqibf63OYCMjcN-TebqF4Xa1ZZlfMHFjOD3_pS9KVyQTJpnEV039O_Q/s16000/SWCA-1513.JPEG" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEib7aDqmh0zskVHiFN_Jvdg73dYw3h3Tcp6fF4dkBuCRjsufSia5azdIxAoYoJdpEVivJIhVNs9EbHfXoV5g9-zuREVpRmcm8mC_bgoSqR4w2s7Rb4tK-C4Ums3_Bb2AmITIsn3kRHNKFXUUEcHvybh5AWIkSGq9cgSePqBh-MPu50Ci8_nT04iAzvD1w/s2436/SWCA-1502.JPEG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2436" data-original-width="1625" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEib7aDqmh0zskVHiFN_Jvdg73dYw3h3Tcp6fF4dkBuCRjsufSia5azdIxAoYoJdpEVivJIhVNs9EbHfXoV5g9-zuREVpRmcm8mC_bgoSqR4w2s7Rb4tK-C4Ums3_Bb2AmITIsn3kRHNKFXUUEcHvybh5AWIkSGq9cgSePqBh-MPu50Ci8_nT04iAzvD1w/s16000/SWCA-1502.JPEG" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyDPtRaz0AL5cf0rkNlYV5Msfux_cISR9Fj2xW2u_dkI_hE5LY7y4OeCMgtxAeFoFMAmJ6o_3SSvaffoRffC6NWBJ9SNuH5IFC8ZxquLRNL2zin1dbdMcFyTGnqvunHyoSbD9ju0qyDn4-J4KWKcz_EveCMTsuiDS1lxJDh6CQjV3qC9sUjIw8MYDQEQ/s2436/SWCA-1487.JPEG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2436" data-original-width="1625" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyDPtRaz0AL5cf0rkNlYV5Msfux_cISR9Fj2xW2u_dkI_hE5LY7y4OeCMgtxAeFoFMAmJ6o_3SSvaffoRffC6NWBJ9SNuH5IFC8ZxquLRNL2zin1dbdMcFyTGnqvunHyoSbD9ju0qyDn4-J4KWKcz_EveCMTsuiDS1lxJDh6CQjV3qC9sUjIw8MYDQEQ/s16000/SWCA-1487.JPEG" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigGv7f03qgub4PRFl_nB1dTLRbjo5e6Psz0j0CfUp_N2Eb-x4RfKp1LRErB_AMeAk535sCfZ79T_VwNTj2VFKo_z9hlz1BsHARSJNT74OCjqOm91Xt5jc65s8YUd-6GxnbavYjMl2rJMKQAMcHTkAHWGVguzve0YcEP4oxKlubLEHKCODu9tXGU8HU5g/s2436/SWCA-1475.JPEG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2436" data-original-width="1625" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigGv7f03qgub4PRFl_nB1dTLRbjo5e6Psz0j0CfUp_N2Eb-x4RfKp1LRErB_AMeAk535sCfZ79T_VwNTj2VFKo_z9hlz1BsHARSJNT74OCjqOm91Xt5jc65s8YUd-6GxnbavYjMl2rJMKQAMcHTkAHWGVguzve0YcEP4oxKlubLEHKCODu9tXGU8HU5g/s16000/SWCA-1475.JPEG" /></a></div><br /><br /><p></p>Savanna Oudithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04473574316101559927noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3142861747330012546.post-80439864594104890912021-12-28T12:07:00.003-08:002021-12-28T12:07:43.614-08:00The Clawdite Chronicles 12.28.21 - Making the Holster, Helmet, and Finishing Touches<p>We've (almost) made it to the end of The Clawdite Chronicles! I'll be doing one final update with "reveal" photos of my Zam Wesell costume, but today I will be covering all of the details for how I created the holster, helmet, and finishing touches. </p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgc2njiVijzcewMo8YAiskrHg9Ggg3mokfBVdAnO9iu4OwaDbKyAdCDTeZ0Wbi4ODvnMqcWEt8MQzYegn4LW_DdYPEpON7R7nto32AAm_Ls3FOJp2-rq5wH1EnjdeTEYOKXCCVdAg2rAG1P7ZfUPLUCyww6CiPNHoqEzCgOD10tulQ6P_1irtspVsouEQ=s1080" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1080" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgc2njiVijzcewMo8YAiskrHg9Ggg3mokfBVdAnO9iu4OwaDbKyAdCDTeZ0Wbi4ODvnMqcWEt8MQzYegn4LW_DdYPEpON7R7nto32AAm_Ls3FOJp2-rq5wH1EnjdeTEYOKXCCVdAg2rAG1P7ZfUPLUCyww6CiPNHoqEzCgOD10tulQ6P_1irtspVsouEQ=s16000" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p><b>Making the Holster</b></p><p>After making the leather skirt for this costume, I still had enough leftover leather hide to create the holster, helmet brim, and abdomen detail. I wanted to dye these pieces all at once so the color would be consistent throughout. To make the holster, I used reference photos of the holster made by <a href="http://www.farawaycreations.com/">Cal at Far Away Creations</a>. The photos of the holster he made for his wife really helped me understand the overall shape of the holster and how to cut the leather. I made a pattern out of paper and affixed it to the cummerbund to make sure it was the right scale. I also made sure to test fit the paper around my blaster to be extra sure that it would all fit together. After that, I used the paper template to cut my leather pieces, which consisted of three major pieces and five small strips, totaling eight pieces altogether. </p><p>Once the pieces were cut and beveled, I used my <a href="https://www.thedorkydiva.com/2021/04/the-clawdite-chronicles-41721-making.html">original dye ratios from the skirt</a> to determine what color I wanted the holster, helmet brim, and abdomen piece to be. I ended up going with shade 5.4 and added in a tiny bit more of the oxblood and brown colors to bring out the richness and depth of the red undertones.</p><p>After the pieces dried, I assembled them with leather glue. To finish the holster, I affixed the inner piece with two metal snaps (just like the screen-used costume) and weathered the edges of the holster with some acrylic paint. This piece has such a beautifully organic shape and I was worried that I wouldn't get it right, but I'm pleased with the end result and love how the blaster fits in it perfectly.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiE2VJghLC-W1zaCeuQsiRH9vvIrPqeohvUrONSSV4U8Q52IxekHYfSRuX0h8NXYjMdicJJwY5o57kniUx-uDvI8OKpINtkRjFJe0R5jrRmVg5qVnDz4Uy3CE5j_dME37EKe_yWiNjBH-k8fPK-Ni59yuaqx1okACzZCmp7NYPu_C9il3vtVDjTCZ1K_g=s1920" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1920" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiE2VJghLC-W1zaCeuQsiRH9vvIrPqeohvUrONSSV4U8Q52IxekHYfSRuX0h8NXYjMdicJJwY5o57kniUx-uDvI8OKpINtkRjFJe0R5jrRmVg5qVnDz4Uy3CE5j_dME37EKe_yWiNjBH-k8fPK-Ni59yuaqx1okACzZCmp7NYPu_C9il3vtVDjTCZ1K_g=s16000" /></a></div><p><b>Making the Helmet</b></p><p>The helmet was easily the most frustrating piece to make for this costume, which is why I saved it for the very end. The base helmet I had was a little nicked up and not perfectly symmetrical, so I filled the low spots with Bondo and attempted to fix some of the symmetry issues by filling/sanding out the Bondo before priming and painting it all over again. Once that was "done" (it's still not perfect), I mocked up the ears and created a blueprint for the armatures by measuring small plastic strips and bending them into the shape that I needed. After that, I mounted the ears to the helmet with some aluminum bars, bolts, and epoxy. I intentionally wanted the ears to be removable so I could take them off (along with the binoculars) when I needed to travel with it. Those pieces are very delicate, so I don't want to risk banging them up too much on the way to an event or convention. </p><p>As I mentioned above, I made the helmet brim at the same time I made the holster. To make the brim, I really just started with a guess at the shape and slowly whittled down an oval shaped piece of leather to create the right shape. This is one piece of the costume that I hope to upgrade in the future. I'm not very happy with the overall silhouette of the brim, as it need to taper down more in the front, but it works for now.</p><p>When the ears were fully mounted, it was time to make the binocular armatures. I had purchased two different sizes of hollow brass bars that would fit together, just like the real one in the movie. Using the blueprint I created, I was able to figure out the exact measurements for the brass bars. Once they were bent at the correct angles, I was able to fit them together and mount them to the heim joint at the center of the helmet's ears with a gob of JB Weld Steel Stik. When the JB Weld was dry, I sanded it down smooth and primed the armatures gray. Then I painted them aluminum just like the rest of the helmet. </p><p>Finally, I mounted the binoculars to the armatures with a tiny ball-socket rod used for RC cars and a dab of CA glue. Then I weathered the helmet with a mix of black, purple, and brown paints, slowly building up the grime and giving it an overall dirty looking wash.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjlC8i3PS0VGaixZ8_0lAiA5DBvWW6_Btgdi4ozk7sDRVr4rsNAUjbttpBQREC8hfy-u4c6a76XVnMmZqK9jN_DyFQysOA8SHhKbSR5SKRFnolkfVVe17oZ_TGJXTSLoG-ohReLH7TEt4gFsqE5B9mJyWIoNTYU1dL8YFmuPPMndFwnle1GcRlkLNXY8g=s1920" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1920" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjlC8i3PS0VGaixZ8_0lAiA5DBvWW6_Btgdi4ozk7sDRVr4rsNAUjbttpBQREC8hfy-u4c6a76XVnMmZqK9jN_DyFQysOA8SHhKbSR5SKRFnolkfVVe17oZ_TGJXTSLoG-ohReLH7TEt4gFsqE5B9mJyWIoNTYU1dL8YFmuPPMndFwnle1GcRlkLNXY8g=s16000" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>The very last detail to add to the helmet was the veil. This was a fairly simple piece to make as it's basically just a trapezoid shape. I used the same purple microsuede that I used for the cape/hood to make the veil and I lined it with a red satin. One side is mounted to the helmet with a small O-ring and the other side connect with a magnet sewn into the corner of the veil. </div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjgQl4qKasVY2UlFYlIhnrQzRZN31pdzHR_rU1EtqpM-PAPK43Xzh1R2KdysS-WHtCd_oZCQAujxemHK1ATLNXLyBMoVkdTXkGTCE41wskwSe6yuPLIIZPRygunTyEamgOJsKvAw7j0azp27Ey2eUtlCZTU1gC8DPYWjASu8nBfzT5byjkFNbjNUymv9w=s1920" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1920" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjgQl4qKasVY2UlFYlIhnrQzRZN31pdzHR_rU1EtqpM-PAPK43Xzh1R2KdysS-WHtCd_oZCQAujxemHK1ATLNXLyBMoVkdTXkGTCE41wskwSe6yuPLIIZPRygunTyEamgOJsKvAw7j0azp27Ey2eUtlCZTU1gC8DPYWjASu8nBfzT5byjkFNbjNUymv9w=s16000" /></a></div><p><b>Finishing Touches / Small Details</b></p><p>The most intimidating part of the Zam Wesell costume is the mountain of small details to execute perfectly. I skipped over this a little in my build process, but while working on the major pieces like the skirt, chest armor, belt, and whatnot, I was also slowly working on a lot of the tiny details. This includes all of the things listed below:</p><p>- painting and weathering the hand plates and thumb guards, attaching them to the gloves</p><p>- attaching rubber hoses to the midsection greeblie, figuring out how to affix those to the leather vest</p><p>- connecting the chest armor, midsection tubes, stomach armor, and ovary greeblies all together</p><p>- hand-tying the leather skirt to the under belt, attaching greeblies to the under belt to be hidden by the cummerbund</p><p>- painting and attaching the toe armor and toe darts to the shoes</p><p>- sewing the black ribbed cuff for the left forearm armor</p><p>PLUS test fitting everything, color matching, and weathering along the way. Below are a few photos of the painted toe darts, the forearm cuff, and shoes before the toe darts were attached. </p><p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgx3hecNPyJhqpw5zl9N7gB5aZcEic5C4Bb8gch8MrR00d8ntXXJQkZcnX45hFOmtJkbFcG9Wr-cW1Oe5BtJ0k0Ax0GhaNlvIC2E3jg99GQlr_z9Ve0YffahHtIebLmowP5ZFJFd4FxmOBDiUocbYgvoukCMegh7raWdo7Z0W6OMtU9hWFQl96rzAVtow=s1920" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1920" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgx3hecNPyJhqpw5zl9N7gB5aZcEic5C4Bb8gch8MrR00d8ntXXJQkZcnX45hFOmtJkbFcG9Wr-cW1Oe5BtJ0k0Ax0GhaNlvIC2E3jg99GQlr_z9Ve0YffahHtIebLmowP5ZFJFd4FxmOBDiUocbYgvoukCMegh7raWdo7Z0W6OMtU9hWFQl96rzAVtow=s16000" /></a></p><p>And that pretty much wraps up the entirety of this build. The last and final post will show off the full-body photos that I took at Emerald City Comic Con. <br /><b><br /></b></p>Savanna Oudithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04473574316101559927noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3142861747330012546.post-56177069962358737222021-12-20T08:52:00.000-08:002021-12-20T08:52:11.995-08:00The Clawdite Chronicles 12.20.21 - Making the Chest Armor, Painting the Shins and BlasterLong time no update! As I'm writing this, my Zam Wesell costume is actually COMPLETE! I haven't had time lately to update the build progress, so I'm going to retroactively walk you through the past few months and show you what it took to finish up the costume. Today I'll be going over how I made the chest armor, painted the shins, made the ankle armor, and painted the blaster. <div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjPa_hD1NXK7ocXi9fNS6-Y4eYCYNkMDRBYBL-AKODXBF1CMWbNvnVaBV1Z5qoNlC66na8OlwBNR7V6czVklxPCt_JaprkUIEa4lNjWFSaKN5ocuGH_GMZ7CEt4Oq1riV3FnID6eiSeon9Ql3YbFQoT76ge3bhL8XWNU1W-2cka9hn9oaorss8rPnhHpQ=s1080" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1080" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjPa_hD1NXK7ocXi9fNS6-Y4eYCYNkMDRBYBL-AKODXBF1CMWbNvnVaBV1Z5qoNlC66na8OlwBNR7V6czVklxPCt_JaprkUIEa4lNjWFSaKN5ocuGH_GMZ7CEt4Oq1riV3FnID6eiSeon9Ql3YbFQoT76ge3bhL8XWNU1W-2cka9hn9oaorss8rPnhHpQ=s16000" /></a></div><br /><div><b>Making the Chest Armor</b></div><div><b><br /></b></div><div>When I originally started this build, I thought the fiberglass chest armor I received with the rest of my armor/greeblie parts would be used on my final costume. Once I got further into the build and realized how much shorter my torso is compared to Leeanna Walsman's torso, I realized that I would need to scale down some of my armor parts to fit me better. Since my original chest armor was solid fiberglass, I didn't really want to deal with cutting and resizing it, so I decided to start from scratch. I used the original chest armor to make a template out of paper and resized it to my liking. Then I took some styrene to cut out the base (underside) of the armor. </div><div><br /></div><div>After that, I cut the trim piece out of ABS plastic and cut the inlays out of ABS plastic as well. I heated up all of the pieces with a heat gun to wrap over my shoulders and under my bust line. Then I glued the trim onto the base of the armor, which turned out to be much tricker than I originally anticipated. Once that was all done, I hand-cut the Mabari inscriptions out of the inlay plastic with an X-acto knife (this was soooo difficult to get right). Finally, I primed everything with spray paint and painted the trim/base armor dark purple, to eventually match the shin armor and forearm cuff. The inlay piece was painted with an aluminum finish. To finish it all up, I weathered the pieces, glued the inlay into the base, and attached the left and right sides with hinges so it would flex over my chest.</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjZYPtVGJOwU4fYSEYcceMHboc93eOO4lqGVGQ89RoZpzY86W1PHx7w7NapF7jaAvN2FKXXW4tgFSXCqd22KD6XskPluB2L2kamU3oOBQ64P6D_1GL4_qlA2CC6x_8GgP-se0U49BFfL9VLxsdDEhhZWI8FzcnZp0-SUuNv-PwUkOasFiVrQBBcDJW13w=s1920" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1920" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjZYPtVGJOwU4fYSEYcceMHboc93eOO4lqGVGQ89RoZpzY86W1PHx7w7NapF7jaAvN2FKXXW4tgFSXCqd22KD6XskPluB2L2kamU3oOBQ64P6D_1GL4_qlA2CC6x_8GgP-se0U49BFfL9VLxsdDEhhZWI8FzcnZp0-SUuNv-PwUkOasFiVrQBBcDJW13w=s16000" /></a></div><br /><div><b>Painting the Shin Armor</b></div><div><b><br /></b></div><div>After painstakingly sanding, filling, and sanding the shin armor some more, I finally felt like I was in a decent place to start painting the left and right shins. I will say, this is the one piece of my final costume that I intend to upgrade and improve at a later date, but for now I decided to paint the armor instead of wrapping it with leather, just to save me some time ahead of my December 4th due date. </div><div><br /></div><div>For the base color of the lower legs, I chose the Montana Gold - Deep Purple spray paint. The color on the can looked exactly like what I had in mind. However, once I started spraying the pieces, I realized the color had a hint more blue than I really wanted to see. To counteract this, I used a blend of airbrushing paints to mute the color and give it a slight red tint. </div><div><br /></div><div>In the photo below, you'll see the middle picture is the before (Montana Gold) and the after (airbrushed). I used brown, black, and red airbrush paints to give it an overall darker color and more shaded look. After putting in the time to airbrush them, I was really pleased with the final color. </div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhnTzgjK9PGSlxjHpjwM2eHQ_rJhZuHwdmNjtwB44ozZMakoe-QZUvbnjbqaQ63rZDYjGP91gXEb_1Hco17mdhNarOZaqMtQwt3hdfpj7xErmkwbPxlIjK-SEh-1hdfVaq1SOttXmIrQHrxXNjhW7TTxFKiq1BA1E8gQ4gE_Y5Kc5KmiKp3niSHl1rRYQ=s1920" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1920" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhnTzgjK9PGSlxjHpjwM2eHQ_rJhZuHwdmNjtwB44ozZMakoe-QZUvbnjbqaQ63rZDYjGP91gXEb_1Hco17mdhNarOZaqMtQwt3hdfpj7xErmkwbPxlIjK-SEh-1hdfVaq1SOttXmIrQHrxXNjhW7TTxFKiq1BA1E8gQ4gE_Y5Kc5KmiKp3niSHl1rRYQ=s16000" /></a></div><br /><div><b>Making the Ankle Armor</b></div><div><b><br /></b></div><div>The ankle armor was another piece that almost stumped me. These pieces bolt into the shin armor, need to flex with the foot, and had recessed notches across the front. After lots of thought, I decided to make the base of the ankle armor out of ABS plastic (same as the chest armor inlays) and overlay it with a thin piece of styrene that I could then cut notches into. I layered the pieces together and tacked them at the seams with glue. After a coat of primer, I painted them with the aluminum color and weathered them. I also drilled holes into the ankle armor and shin armor to bolt them together with Chicago screws. </div><div><b><br /></b></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgzPYGsMGLUUD96msSjbQjl06ac-CMzsvh15aZX98tn3FTkn8uqksT71StJ5nm2y5Bxh47Zr8dM3IWuTcDUkCxKlSrcYgDTzA7zFk2PBpp5uJgchhXFkTQ7n8-fl0iY-QAFwzmdf5WlvnnjiGXBd3PGyAZ3-pxxMlks9jDFSdYS4QYP8SadlcP8C0cGMg=s1920" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1920" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgzPYGsMGLUUD96msSjbQjl06ac-CMzsvh15aZX98tn3FTkn8uqksT71StJ5nm2y5Bxh47Zr8dM3IWuTcDUkCxKlSrcYgDTzA7zFk2PBpp5uJgchhXFkTQ7n8-fl0iY-QAFwzmdf5WlvnnjiGXBd3PGyAZ3-pxxMlks9jDFSdYS4QYP8SadlcP8C0cGMg=s16000" /></a></div><div><br /></div><b>Assembling and Painting the Blaster</b></div><div><b><br /></b></div><div>You might remember seeing in <a href="https://www.thedorkydiva.com/2021/08/the-clawdite-chronicles-81721-making.html">my last post</a> a photo of the 3D printed blaster parts. These parts were already very smooth and didn't need much cleanup work, but the blaster was missing a couple key details that I wanted to include. Thankfully my husband was able to 3D model and print the small detail parts so I could glue them onto the blaster. He also remodeled the "nozzle" (end piece of the barrel) because I wasn't happy with the size and details of the original one I received. </div><div><br /></div><div>I assembled the barrel with an aluminum rod through the center to make it more rigid and stable. I glued the barrel parts together and took a lot of care to sand everything down very smoothly so you wouldn't be able to see the seam lines. After that was all prepped, I used <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bxcuz8dwwa0" target="_blank">Gordon Tarpley's tutorial</a> to prime the barrel gray, rub it with ultra fine steel wool, and paint it with Alclad Chrome to give it a very slick, machined aluminum appearance. </div><div><br /></div><div>Lastly, I painted the handle black and glued together all the greeblies to complete the blaster. I love the way it turned out!</div><div><b><br /></b></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiuZ79nNS1FVuPufc9E4ynspw5Qqn7Me-OjwvUa-aDqiAo1Q_2ZixD2M9AUf44i38rinHuy7PurEZ9KoR84Ll1ZANdhegRIu0RNbGRtOoiWNQTZqPAPXsLjV27GeajAyswIp2annIn-UirF7szZxvVJ51Rfq0XAeAWvj7hGuDtL7NJprn5lOZW0g4YrLw=s1920" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1920" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiuZ79nNS1FVuPufc9E4ynspw5Qqn7Me-OjwvUa-aDqiAo1Q_2ZixD2M9AUf44i38rinHuy7PurEZ9KoR84Ll1ZANdhegRIu0RNbGRtOoiWNQTZqPAPXsLjV27GeajAyswIp2annIn-UirF7szZxvVJ51Rfq0XAeAWvj7hGuDtL7NJprn5lOZW0g4YrLw=s16000" /></a></div><br /><br />That's the update for now! This season we are highlighting four amazing bounty hunting babes in the galaxy- Fennec Shand, Aurra Sing, Zam Wesell, and Sy Snootles. <span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Lato; font-size: 16px;">Tori from <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/CreatureCartel">Creature Cartel</a> designed three accessories while Alyssa from <a href="https://alyssa-bradley.com/">Whimsy Design & Illustration</a> and I teamed up to make three different designs for T-shirts, coffee mugs, and decals.</span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFzi-wx-nkuOJwIT6o3HrFFSzbPiTzveHJbWzi_Hw5HVCjrf5RMq7U-J599V_ZTbhvvO8YJXDTWVxqa3vQ_zqqRLXHlBiKbwIO3s5ERnss8a9zCvVKZulQe5f0pH1lcGFyW8T_a9jU7P2j/s2048/DSC_9238.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1317" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFzi-wx-nkuOJwIT6o3HrFFSzbPiTzveHJbWzi_Hw5HVCjrf5RMq7U-J599V_ZTbhvvO8YJXDTWVxqa3vQ_zqqRLXHlBiKbwIO3s5ERnss8a9zCvVKZulQe5f0pH1lcGFyW8T_a9jU7P2j/s16000/DSC_9238.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEge3Y9u6SrQSYYHU2zY_e2auUrPQHRX6emmJZCR_RvVg_jlNfNQytQ647SNYmn1cYvKzO5FZNPfs_YsI3c9hZlXkR25GrdRRoBOs7tM9dHjVlbtAI82DPO1hDeMiK0yqjpvAnntxr8CPTRG/s2048/DSC_9272.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1367" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEge3Y9u6SrQSYYHU2zY_e2auUrPQHRX6emmJZCR_RvVg_jlNfNQytQ647SNYmn1cYvKzO5FZNPfs_YsI3c9hZlXkR25GrdRRoBOs7tM9dHjVlbtAI82DPO1hDeMiK0yqjpvAnntxr8CPTRG/s16000/DSC_9272.jpg" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div></div><p></p><p><b>Accessories.</b></p><p>Tori created three beautiful accessories for this collection. For Zam Wesell, she took inspiration from Zam's leather skirt and created a necklace that has a similar pattern as a bar pendant. I love this design because it's super subtle, but as a Zam Wesell fan I can immediately recognize the nod to her character. For Aurra Sing, Tori took inspiration from Aurra's epic ponytail and created an orange velvet scrunchie with painted wood beads sewed to the scrunchie, much like the beads that are in Aurra's hair. Lastly, for Fennec, she absolutely nailed the textured design from Fennec's leather costume and made a pair of earrings that resemble the angled skirt-like detail in Fennec's outfit.</p><div style="font-stretch: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div><div style="font-stretch: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><blockquote><a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/CreatureCartel">Click here to find the accessories at Creature Cartel</a></blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjweVRkR9o1LBNYScDivt_Ky6vGjCpsDTK5hXuWI2E9pMttiJwGwjuO_k-Gl-Nr2KNy8XXPhRqeBc3a2aGRvKjS8FFhICgzNVWa_OzDPX_05gmcz-wgwzacDchCTLSDrkRo4GCKilvZkZcO/s2048/DSC_9196.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1367" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjweVRkR9o1LBNYScDivt_Ky6vGjCpsDTK5hXuWI2E9pMttiJwGwjuO_k-Gl-Nr2KNy8XXPhRqeBc3a2aGRvKjS8FFhICgzNVWa_OzDPX_05gmcz-wgwzacDchCTLSDrkRo4GCKilvZkZcO/s16000/DSC_9196.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVqx_8Vz7N_FwWMwLYt9TQjC4nRtk5vrOSX9EMdkqN1SozGa2uXL1HxD8hDOJuStYgX2OOip6YTXwKwieRqSfy9PCzmUdtgT-H2E0VgVeV8K0Ra10gpTfCox4_yK1IKmWOXDt4jTKMo7oz/s2048/DSC_9247.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1473" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVqx_8Vz7N_FwWMwLYt9TQjC4nRtk5vrOSX9EMdkqN1SozGa2uXL1HxD8hDOJuStYgX2OOip6YTXwKwieRqSfy9PCzmUdtgT-H2E0VgVeV8K0Ra10gpTfCox4_yK1IKmWOXDt4jTKMo7oz/s16000/DSC_9247.jpg" /></a></div><br /><br /><p></p></span></div><p><b>Apparel.</b></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">When planning this collection, I found myself leaning towards a look that was a little more edgy than to our past drops. Bounty hunters are rough and tough, so I wanted the apparel designs to reflect that nature. Alyssa and I landed on using flash tattoos as a design aesthetic to guide the overall look of these pieces. As usual, Alyssa captured exactly what I had in mind and translated it into stunning artwork!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Tori and I have talked about highlighting bounty hunters for a very long time. Since there are so many good ones, we had a difficult time picking just a few. Together we landed on choosing Aurra, Zam, and Fennec to widen our selection between the prequels and newer era of Star Wars content. In addition to these characters, I decided to create a shirt for Tori that featured her favorite character, Sy Snootles. Alyssa and I secretly schemed together to make this shirt for Tori and surprise her when it arrived. I'm so glad we were able to pull it off because the shirt looks so cute and Tori really loves it! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Rather than offering separate shirts for Zam and Aurra, I wanted to combine them into one. We never see these two characters on screen together, but they live simultaneously in my mind because of Disney's Star Wars Weekends. If you ever attended that event, you know those characters were always around each other for meet and greets or in the parade. The tee features each character's side-profile and the Aurebesh writing across the banner reads "Huntress".</div><p>Fennec is a very new character in the Star Wars universe, but she's already proved to be a fan-favorite and an ultimate badass. I wanted to focus on the silhouette of her helmet and the setting suns of Tatooine as a nod back to her very first appearance in The Mandalorian. I love how Alyssa really emphasized the texture and detail in Fennec's braided hairstyle within the artwork!</p><p>All of these shirts are available on black tees for both men and women. I would love to offer these on a wider selection of colors, but unfortunately at this time there are a lot of T-shirt shortages. So for now, they are just available in black and hopefully in the future I can offer more colors.</p><p><br /></p><p><a href="https://thedorkydiva.bigcartel.com/" style="background: linear-gradient(rgb(243, 230, 255) 0%, rgb(243, 230, 255) 100%) 0px 100% / 4px 7px repeat-x rgb(255, 255, 255); Since my previous <a href="http://www.thedorkydiva.com/2021/04/the-clawdite-chronicles-41721-making.html">update in April</a>, I've made the cummerbund and hanging beads. I've also received my armor pieces, blaster pieces, and started working on the armor elements.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4aYDykXCs1100G2xRSp_jmBk4I7KhUT_JiB49XYMFCgJOQJ-PmhFr-2RKhRBqaoOma7zhN5_tTsgPDGMx9znAH426yRHtu5wC2eEOgTwg8fkwNFUbR6lJtIKy2zf6-fFvWSV2xV47iGwC/s1080/the+dorky+diva.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1080" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4aYDykXCs1100G2xRSp_jmBk4I7KhUT_JiB49XYMFCgJOQJ-PmhFr-2RKhRBqaoOma7zhN5_tTsgPDGMx9znAH426yRHtu5wC2eEOgTwg8fkwNFUbR6lJtIKy2zf6-fFvWSV2xV47iGwC/s16000/the+dorky+diva.jpg" /></a></div><br /><p><b>Making the Cummerbund</b></p><p>This piece alone was the most difficult piece of the costume I've had to make thus far. The cummerbund is a belt-like ribbed leather piece that covers the bottom of her vest and top of the skirt. It features four channels that are filled to have some dimension, with stitches in between each channel. It's laced up with speed hooks on the back and at the front right hip, which requires the cummerbund to be made in two pieces. My first attempt at this cummerbund wasn't a terrible try, but I had a very difficult time filling the channels and figuring out how to enclose each end of the cummerbund similar to the way the movie costume appears. After many weeks of fighting with it, I figured out that I needed to pull quilting batting through the channels with some flexible wire to make them full, but not too stiff. Then I folded the ends inward and left them unstitched, using the speed hooks alone to close the ends. I ended up having to buy three sets of speed hooks from various companies until I found a set that was high quality and wouldn't rip through the leather. I'm very glad this piece is done!</p><p>I also purchased some glass beads and strung them up to create the detail that hangs from the left side of her belt.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrAJu1RoBNmywERMiZ-ivnJ8TignttK70p0yi3VM0Jp-4USU1LzSnRhYiJF-tLprNQ4LOs4PVCcvjkRP98ayxL_TmH-LQ8NRPAVegiPnn91qYqSnR0-ao4aYctBIU9SikGHeLP0keh5CEU/s1920/Zam+Wesell+Costume.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1920" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrAJu1RoBNmywERMiZ-ivnJ8TignttK70p0yi3VM0Jp-4USU1LzSnRhYiJF-tLprNQ4LOs4PVCcvjkRP98ayxL_TmH-LQ8NRPAVegiPnn91qYqSnR0-ao4aYctBIU9SikGHeLP0keh5CEU/s16000/Zam+Wesell+Costume.jpg" /></a></div><br /><p><b>The Armor</b></p><p>Thankfully going into this costume build, I knew that I had a friend who could make the armor pieces for me. I would, of course, need to finish and assemble them, but getting this much of a head start on all of those elements was a huge help. My armor parts arrived in July, consisting of the forearms, lower legs, helmet, greeblies, hand plates, and pretty much any other hard part I needed.</p><p>I started working on the armor by cleaning up any imperfections in the cast parts, filling them with Bondo, and prepping them to be painted. It took a few weeks for my aluminum paint to arrive, so the next step for a lot of these pieces will be coming soon as they get painted again.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjuvGG16w10gAJs2Jto6Z-6MQjyi_FStxeiNb7M9diDaFFOWPakJxFUeqRLFvJ3Rka6A1Ovsd28OW7acSgeGMJp3dKQC9_LMHj1hEYvFtvWBYafKuJ6J1Two3IQDe_kPGkvB0r0G_cuhzk/s1920/13.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1920" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjuvGG16w10gAJs2Jto6Z-6MQjyi_FStxeiNb7M9diDaFFOWPakJxFUeqRLFvJ3Rka6A1Ovsd28OW7acSgeGMJp3dKQC9_LMHj1hEYvFtvWBYafKuJ6J1Two3IQDe_kPGkvB0r0G_cuhzk/s16000/13.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div>The lower legs were especially difficult because they were very uneven and had tons of air bubbles throughout. I ended up sanding them down a lot, filling them with auto body primer, Bondo, and sanding them again. I've gotten them to a much smoother state now so they are ready to be painted the final color.<div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitlNFo_hY-9vSc-ut_XSTyEm_xCuwkoj1aQikKxLuk2kvcrTo2nXF2DmjdAXKOBSw88qH0NJyysOqxQPXFMa_R-HoDEjVHW6U5YaixDmteBACoVcScsP1ZmsNLHnkxkSE8RVd97aBJx1hU/s1920/14.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1920" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitlNFo_hY-9vSc-ut_XSTyEm_xCuwkoj1aQikKxLuk2kvcrTo2nXF2DmjdAXKOBSw88qH0NJyysOqxQPXFMa_R-HoDEjVHW6U5YaixDmteBACoVcScsP1ZmsNLHnkxkSE8RVd97aBJx1hU/s16000/14.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">You can see in the photos above and below how much the lower leg armor changed from how I received them to how they look primed. Definitely a lot better from where I started! I also picked up a pair of purple leather gloves recently that I think will work out for this costume. They are a little darker than I'd prefer, but I think I can lighten them just a touch to work for what I need.</div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEii-lpV4TPl6hV9AdWlHEZoLe32aRry7WTMyGj8i52r2U1qONxCd6v8XPQDExNwkzbeY1sTl02BXlKp7X-s2T32tBhAqynXHw__udOoqssV6f1atMvtul_KEAnGpdWqpwhZ5zl0g9Swvymd/s1920/Zam+Wesell+Costume+%25282%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1920" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEii-lpV4TPl6hV9AdWlHEZoLe32aRry7WTMyGj8i52r2U1qONxCd6v8XPQDExNwkzbeY1sTl02BXlKp7X-s2T32tBhAqynXHw__udOoqssV6f1atMvtul_KEAnGpdWqpwhZ5zl0g9Swvymd/s16000/Zam+Wesell+Costume+%25282%2529.jpg" /></a></div><br /><p>The last armor-related pieces I've worked on lately are a few hand-painted greeblies. Below you can see comparison shots of the pieces from the actual screen-used costume vs. the ones I painted. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg45RuDt-NxWIHipKGP3se13lZC0eih7kWVrcRUKFiC2dBRl_TaULd6sToqE366x6E-jJMxsbrTgWvcH7jWnARBpHqQ2t9CG56OqtKrAtezOUz5C4MiTUeyoietKweN9GTh7yBxmcM7x3R1/s1920/Zam+Wesell+Costume+%25283%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1920" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg45RuDt-NxWIHipKGP3se13lZC0eih7kWVrcRUKFiC2dBRl_TaULd6sToqE366x6E-jJMxsbrTgWvcH7jWnARBpHqQ2t9CG56OqtKrAtezOUz5C4MiTUeyoietKweN9GTh7yBxmcM7x3R1/s16000/Zam+Wesell+Costume+%25283%2529.jpg" /></a></div><br /><p><b>The Blaster</b></p><p>I was really hoping to get a machined aluminum blaster to use for this costume, but it's been difficult to find someone willing to make it for me. In the meantime, I've decided to go with a 3D printed version instead. I'm planning on painting this to look like aluminum with the Alclad II Chrome laquer paint. The nozzle on the end of my blaster print isn't entirely accurate, so I hope to get that remodeled before assembling and painting the whole thing. Below is a photo of the pieces I currently have along with the paint I plan to use.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhj8IGZae1oqVVnxvAn7zkK3IcRyfI9vTlC2pHslYjdiHRIcGFKlVnsrRYh-sy9TSMSnyQ3qS-UQNgYF2oBvYc_UHqg18xJp57_eG0izpY2GUW08VexUBhhPimzmtSnnOc7zbsX-9Gn2G1v/s1920/15.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1920" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhj8IGZae1oqVVnxvAn7zkK3IcRyfI9vTlC2pHslYjdiHRIcGFKlVnsrRYh-sy9TSMSnyQ3qS-UQNgYF2oBvYc_UHqg18xJp57_eG0izpY2GUW08VexUBhhPimzmtSnnOc7zbsX-9Gn2G1v/s16000/15.jpg" /></a></div><br /><p>Those are about all of the updates I have at the moment. I plan to start painting the armor pieces and assemble them together in the next few weeks. For Sabine, something sturdier like a leather bracelet just felt right and I wanted to make a point of capturing her artistic spirit through the paint splatters and smudges. For Hera something feminine but not too frilly made sense, so when I found the suede tassels in a muted green I knew that was it! In brainstorming with my fellow Celestial Sisters, we landed on the marbled earring studs since they both incorporated the colors of Hera’s design and reminded us some of her son Jacen as well."</span></div><div style="font-stretch: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div><div style="font-stretch: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><blockquote><a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/CreatureCartel">Click here to find the accessories at Creature Cartel</a></blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-wnPWVu_gaWJ0Vm15e5n4M7Ox9tQ_9sZPdd3f6p2A0HKE5hVVGZxme0jLVYJASHE_FwCFB_IcUM9Mhsw6A1dN3uc_oeUM4Ap263BV5zGSq1wBFMnwmmpNuCVWO264fKKFvxQJFk7YiCWw/s1920/Untitled+design+%25282%2529.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1920" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-wnPWVu_gaWJ0Vm15e5n4M7Ox9tQ_9sZPdd3f6p2A0HKE5hVVGZxme0jLVYJASHE_FwCFB_IcUM9Mhsw6A1dN3uc_oeUM4Ap263BV5zGSq1wBFMnwmmpNuCVWO264fKKFvxQJFk7YiCWw/s16000/Untitled+design+%25282%2529.jpg" /></a></div><p> </p></span></div><p><b>Apparel.</b></p><p>For the Hera design, I really wanted to emulate the art style and imagery from WWII posters. Since Hera is a pilot, I thought it was fitting to include the Ghost along with A-Wings to capture the spirit of aviation. Alyssa did such a wonderful job fleshing out this idea and making sure it stayed true to Star Wars!</p><p>For the Sabine design, I wanted it to look like Sabine herself painted the art. There are so many icons that come to mind when I think of her character's journey. I was struggling to find a way to combine her helmet, blasters, the Darksaber, Chopper, and even the little Morai illustration from her Season 3 armor. Alyssa did really nailed how to put all of these elements together and highlight Sabine's graffiti art style!</p><p>These designs are landing right before summer, so I wanted to offer them in a range of bright colors rather than just black or white. You can get the Hera tee in mint green, yellow, or light blue. The Sabine tee is available in purple, yellow, and light blue. They are available in women's and unisex sizing. </p><p><br /></p><p><a href="https://thedorkydiva.bigcartel.com/" style="background: linear-gradient(rgb(243, 230, 255) 0%, rgb(243, 230, 255) 100%) 0px 100% / 4px 7px repeat-x rgb(255, 255, 255); box-sizing: border-box; color: black; font-family: Lato; font-size: 16px; text-align: center; text-decoration-line: none; transition: background-size 0.6s ease 0s;"></a></p><blockquote><a href="https://thedorkydiva.bigcartel.com/" style="background: linear-gradient(rgb(243, 230, 255) 0%, rgb(243, 230, 255) 100%) 0px 100% / 4px 7px repeat-x rgb(255, 255, 255); box-sizing: border-box; color: black; font-family: Lato; font-size: 16px; text-align: center; text-decoration-line: none; transition: background-size 0.6s ease 0s;">Click here for The Dorky Diva Shop</a></blockquote><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZU4Re96uzTB9iW65LsHyg_6UdfsOwIsU4RBvVAl7dJ0AEfho5RL2DukyEqYlvEkXKmNPfgdQhjiKO-fV2RoJK0y605sqi6qPBaCwVc_Jpr5dX7yq38RuLuVDY1qFvZbC1OzWaaVXb4IUe/s1920/1.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1920" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZU4Re96uzTB9iW65LsHyg_6UdfsOwIsU4RBvVAl7dJ0AEfho5RL2DukyEqYlvEkXKmNPfgdQhjiKO-fV2RoJK0y605sqi6qPBaCwVc_Jpr5dX7yq38RuLuVDY1qFvZbC1OzWaaVXb4IUe/s16000/1.jpg" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgi5uDzFqnT07DNpN4bqMXaBHFt71DbYpUrs1Iv8W_hVuqCX_RRuyZj2quv0yFXfM8PG2c7gEHjWaOWdzASEFyqOm2PqsdRjGQN_UFVtyh5BDPSuOojmhaxX5gQ6d2C1euVFx1i8UULWq-R/s1920/4.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1920" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgi5uDzFqnT07DNpN4bqMXaBHFt71DbYpUrs1Iv8W_hVuqCX_RRuyZj2quv0yFXfM8PG2c7gEHjWaOWdzASEFyqOm2PqsdRjGQN_UFVtyh5BDPSuOojmhaxX5gQ6d2C1euVFx1i8UULWq-R/s16000/4.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><p><span style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #222222; font-family: Lato; font-size: 16px; text-align: center;"></span></p><blockquote><span style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #222222; font-family: Lato; font-size: 16px; text-align: center;">Use code </span><span style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #222222; font-family: Lato; font-size: 15px; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: center;">REBELS10 </span><span style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #222222; font-family: Lato; font-size: 16px; text-align: center;">for 10% off your orders in </span><a href="https://thedorkydiva.bigcartel.com/" style="background: linear-gradient(rgb(243, 230, 255) 0%, rgb(243, 230, 255) 100%) 0px 100% / 4px 7px repeat-x rgb(255, 255, 255); box-sizing: border-box; color: black; font-family: Lato; font-size: 16px; text-align: center; text-decoration-line: none; transition: background-size 0.6s ease 0s;">The Dorky Diva Shop</a><span style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #222222; font-family: Lato; font-size: 16px; text-align: center;"> and </span><a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/CreatureCartel" style="background: linear-gradient(rgb(243, 230, 255) 0%, rgb(243, 230, 255) 100%) 0px 100% / 4px 7px repeat-x rgb(255, 255, 255); box-sizing: border-box; color: black; font-family: Lato; font-size: 16px; text-align: center; text-decoration-line: none; transition: background-size 0.6s ease 0s;">Creature Cartel</a><span style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #222222; font-family: Lato; font-size: 16px; text-align: center;"> until May 28th at 11:59pm EST.</span></blockquote><span style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #222222; font-family: Lato; font-size: 16px; text-align: center;"></span><p></p>Savanna Oudithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04473574316101559927noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3142861747330012546.post-70822878208694068882021-04-17T16:26:00.003-07:002021-04-17T16:26:52.091-07:00The Clawdite Chronicles 4.17.21 - Making the Under Suit, Vest, and Skirt<p>I've been making so much progress on my Zam Wesell costume and I'm excited to share some updates here. For my birthday this year, I only wanted to take a couple days off work and focus on this costume project. In just a few short days, I completed the vest and skirt. I also completed the final pair of pants and shirt a few weeks ago, so I have lots of progress to share today. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsbaw43v9Pt4OfZbu4kfxVjJ-gkehFFY3w3uZo_CaP5h9nuu26ufEc2lzX2AbtSt9t2LNqtPQ4uUepUNlxrJUdOJjErAln37EJq6P10uRQvmGTRN1c3cZ139UFgOHcmps7zaxPJ7IR0Vrw/s1080/the+dorky+diva+%25281%2529.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1080" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsbaw43v9Pt4OfZbu4kfxVjJ-gkehFFY3w3uZo_CaP5h9nuu26ufEc2lzX2AbtSt9t2LNqtPQ4uUepUNlxrJUdOJjErAln37EJq6P10uRQvmGTRN1c3cZ139UFgOHcmps7zaxPJ7IR0Vrw/s16000/the+dorky+diva+%25281%2529.jpg" /></a></div><p></p><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><b>Final Under Suit</b></div><div><b><br /></b></div><div>During my <a href="http://www.thedorkydiva.com/2021/03/the-clawdite-chronicles-32221-fabric.html">last update</a>, I shared my prototype pants and felt confident that I was ready to start sewing the real pair. The day before I planned on sewing the real pair, I was searching through more reference photos and noticed another bubble seam that I originally hadn't caught in my first round of prototypes. The bubble seam is on the inner thigh and I couldn't figure out how to <b>reconstruct my pants</b> to include that seam. After several hours of thinking and sketching, I solved the mystery! I made a tiny little doll-sized pair of pants to test my new pattern and it worked like a charm. I got straight to work the next day making the real pants and it was <i>almost</i> a complete success. </div><div><br /></div><div>When I finished the pants at 8pm after sewing literally all day, I noticed that one of the inner thigh panels looked shinier than the rest of the pants. Again, I was stumped and couldn't figure out why this happened! I decided to sleep on it and come back the next morning to see if I could figure out the issue. It turned out that I accidentally cut the inner thigh panel in a perpendicular direction to the rest of the pants, so <b>the grain of the fabric was off</b> and it was reflecting the light differently than the other pieces. Instead of ripping that pair apart, I decided to start from scratch. The result of that decision was <b>a perfect pair of pants</b>!</div><div><br /></div><div>Next up was the shirt. Thankfully Zam's under shirt is pretty simple because only the sleeves are visible on the final costume. It has a <b>bubble seam down the outside of the sleeve</b>, but thankfully no bubble seams anywhere else. I used a long sleeve shirt that already fit me as a base pattern and quickly sewed up the top. I added a couple darts on the back to help make it more fitted around my waist. The actual shirt that is worn in the movie is cropped just under the bust and has black fabric for the rest of the torso. I assume this choice was made to help the costume breathe a little more. I may eventually do this with mine, but for now it's all neoprene. </div><div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwOjqwFWhANcA_fN_2NUmif_9IUQqdT5HUcAXiDdBUJ5Q0JQ0o-1aDuptXYrboSr4A0s6WnxeEKf1y7Gt02-1DhBg8GDGOlsmLl_ag8FBMpf7oEtmZlDZeAHS9wcbKRKzNxEUNWl8eGOa7/s1920/6.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1920" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwOjqwFWhANcA_fN_2NUmif_9IUQqdT5HUcAXiDdBUJ5Q0JQ0o-1aDuptXYrboSr4A0s6WnxeEKf1y7Gt02-1DhBg8GDGOlsmLl_ag8FBMpf7oEtmZlDZeAHS9wcbKRKzNxEUNWl8eGOa7/s16000/6.jpg" /></a></div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><b>Making the Vest</b></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><b><br /></b></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The next piece to make was the vest. In my previous update, I talked about choosing the leather for the vest. After settling on the right color, I needed to figure out how to make the pattern. Zam's vest is very fitted throughout the torso and has <b>lacing up the sides</b> that go from the underarm all the way down to the waist. The front has a zipper that is eventually covered by her armor. There are no visible seams on the back of the vest. I started off by taking a shirt that already fits me, traced around it, and cut the pieces out of some scrap cotton material. I wanted all of the edges of the vest to look very clean and finished, so I took extra care to make a facing for the front, sides, and collar. My first pattern was definitely on the right track, but not anywhere near perfect. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Since my birthday was right around the corner, my parents got me a dress form as a gift. I knew that a dress form would really help me fit the vest (and any future sewing projects) to my body perfectly, so I was really happy to finally have one! As soon as I got it, I <b>pinned my original vest pattern to the dress form</b> and figured out where I needed to alter it. From there, I made a new pattern out of muslin and basted it all together on my sewing machine. Aside from not sewing the zipper in very well, it turned out great! I took apart the fabric vest and used those pieces to cut out my leather, which was totally nerve-wracking. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">My regular sewing machine worked very well on the lambskin leather by using a <b>leather specific needle</b> and heavy duty thread. Thankfully I didn't run into any issues sewing it all together. I used double-sided fabric tape to help stick the facing to the inside rather than topstitching it. The next step was to set all of the grommets along the sides. I ordered some grommets online that a friend recommended and when they arrived in the mail a week later, I immediately set them. Just like the vest made for the movie, I used <b>nine total grommets along each seam</b> (36 total since there are four seams) and spaced them evenly. I also set grommets in the shoulder caps that are turned up and attached to the top of the vest with leather lacing pulled through. </div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimg1MqoUKTgX_c_Sj75Y-cLVSiv8tq2mh0B9Wg-MRPEKwB7SCZSU3jcmHs9DNyvDA8fwxZMkThBIRPT_ahLKB5Rca4na-rXJInDNlWkp2Nm3iX1dt4_d16OuoOPPBYALt2xw2gnMIocxuj/s1920/7.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1920" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimg1MqoUKTgX_c_Sj75Y-cLVSiv8tq2mh0B9Wg-MRPEKwB7SCZSU3jcmHs9DNyvDA8fwxZMkThBIRPT_ahLKB5Rca4na-rXJInDNlWkp2Nm3iX1dt4_d16OuoOPPBYALt2xw2gnMIocxuj/s16000/7.jpg" /></a></div><div><br /></div><b>Making the Skirt</b><div><b><br /></b></div><div>The last thing I've worked on recently is the skirt. Zam wears a <b>half-skirt (also called a kama)</b> that is entirely made of leather rectangles that are laced together. Every rectangle is cut, punched, and dyed by hand. Her actual skirt in the movie has roughly 168 rectangles with 12 rows and 14 columns. Since my hips are a little bigger than Leeanna Walsman who plays Zam, I decided to make my skirt 12x16, which totals 192 pieces. Those two extra columns would help bring the skirt to my hip bones rather than be too short on the sides. <b>Each row of rectangles gets progressively wider</b> as they reach the bottom to flare out the skirt, but <b>the height stays consistent throughout</b>. I used a 6-7oz hide of leather for the skirt and a rotary cutter to evenly cut all of the pieces. The rotary cutter made the whole process very quick and streamlined, so I got all of my pieces cut within two hours. After that, I used a 1/4 inch oblong punch to create holes in each corner of every rectangle, which totals <b>768 holes</b>. I thought this would take a few days to complete, but it only took me two hours. So within just four hours, I got all of my pieces ready to be dyed!</div><div><br /></div><div><div><br /></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdEaehjx5SWaPJe8Shh2QFpQ0ZvsvoCwGJbexBXoS0DScrqdXjktJrtP6-Kv-t0NZv4qEpkbUols29PNo_uD0E9A4BtEXFv6kBUY5SC5x62xJZLBuWVll29ApiSGDCmyqgLDUIUmGo0lrf/s1920/8.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1920" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdEaehjx5SWaPJe8Shh2QFpQ0ZvsvoCwGJbexBXoS0DScrqdXjktJrtP6-Kv-t0NZv4qEpkbUols29PNo_uD0E9A4BtEXFv6kBUY5SC5x62xJZLBuWVll29ApiSGDCmyqgLDUIUmGo0lrf/s16000/8.jpg" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I started early the next day to <b>dye all 192 of the rectangles</b> for my skirt. Zam's skirt looks like a different color in almost every photograph I've found, but one thing is consistent- <b>there is a wide range of tones throughout the skirt</b>. There are brownish purples, darker purples, pinkish purples, etc. I really wanted to capture this somewhat random pattern, so I ended up mixing three separate batches of dye. After a few rounds of trial and error with scrap leather, I found the three tones I wanted to use. Here are the formulas I created with Fiebings leather dye:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><b>Colors used</b>: Oxblood (Red), Navy Blue, Cordovan (Brown), and Purple</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><b>Formulas </b>(see below for photos of samples): </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><u>Sample 5.4 Base Purple</u> (used for roughly 80% of rectangles)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">3 tsp of Cordovan</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">2 tsp of Oxblood</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">1 tsp of Navy Blue</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">1 tsp of Purple</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">1 cup of denatured alcohol</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><u>Sample 6.3 Maroon Purple</u> (used for roughly 10% of rectangles)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">2 tsp of Cordovan</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">2 tsp of Oxblood</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">3/4 tsp of Purple</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">1/3 cup of denatured alcohol</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><u>Sample 3.2 Dark Purple</u> (used for roughly 10% of rectangles)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">5 1/2 tsp of Cordovan</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">5 tsp of Oxblood</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">2 1/2 tsp of Navy Blue</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">2 tsp of Purple</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">1/2 cup of denatured alcohol</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEib17T_Qj_xs65uIFD2xKwQmpNZ9S_TyGIwkPM4wnWG6MupDd_SnfYTef4Dn5p4fLCpBvY16kA9vVT5kaWo5WGqUb5mZOCyT5RXxnO1uySkZhmwOUoMnc_DVwUpvBpzKvseTaIaFxIgVDTE/s1920/10.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1920" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEib17T_Qj_xs65uIFD2xKwQmpNZ9S_TyGIwkPM4wnWG6MupDd_SnfYTef4Dn5p4fLCpBvY16kA9vVT5kaWo5WGqUb5mZOCyT5RXxnO1uySkZhmwOUoMnc_DVwUpvBpzKvseTaIaFxIgVDTE/s16000/10.jpg" /></a></div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Rather than rubbing the dye into the leather, <b>I chose to dip-dye all of my rectangles</b> so they would have a more even color. I made a little hook with some wire to dip each piece and ensure that every little bit of the leather would be colored. Before I started dyeing, I laid out all of my pieces on a black garbage bag in the exact order that they would look when I laced them together. I <b>hand-picked each one</b>, decided which color dye to use, and placed it back where it came from until they were all done. This helped me choose which random pieces I wanted to have as a dark purple or maroon tone. Only about 20% of the pieces were dyed in the <b>dark purple</b> and <b>maroon purple</b> colors. The remaining 80% were all in the <b>base purple</b> color. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">After leaving the pieces out to dry for an hour, I took some <b>neatsfoot oil</b> and rubbed it into each piece with a soft cloth to help protect the leather and keep it from getting too dried out or stiff. When that was dry, I took some <b>acrylic brown paints</b>, diluted them with denatured alcohol, and rubbed them into a few pieces here and there to weather them a bit more. You can see in the photo below how the rectangles changed in color with the oil and weathering added. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6vtHkYaBMe1NEIA8fQlTGF9gT8dw_DogXfWZ8X_lCYLy96roUhBxa1Kb8-kQ9HsRbftVNlY41qdh0sVViCk5gnMYLDs8kMXtO8GGdCoQFLXCjVuz7MiXgN_9ZoeS2O-ERfiLXCJz4pLLW/s1920/9.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1920" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6vtHkYaBMe1NEIA8fQlTGF9gT8dw_DogXfWZ8X_lCYLy96roUhBxa1Kb8-kQ9HsRbftVNlY41qdh0sVViCk5gnMYLDs8kMXtO8GGdCoQFLXCjVuz7MiXgN_9ZoeS2O-ERfiLXCJz4pLLW/s16000/9.jpg" /></a></div><br /><div>While I was dyeing my rectangles, I also dyed the leather lacing that I needed to lace up the skirt. I used <b>white</b> <b>3/16" Deerskin lacing</b>. I used my Sample 3.2 color as the mixture for the lacing color. I originally bought 72 feet of lacing for the skirt, but realized about halfway through that I wouldn't have enough to complete the project. I ended up using about <b>100 feet of lacing</b> for the entire skirt when it was all finished. After meticulously lacing all of the pieces together for a couple hours each day, I finished the skirt in four days. It has such a beautiful weight and flexibility to it! Whoever originally designed this element of the costume had a really great eye for detail and the mind of an engineer. It was a tedious piece to make, but I'm so thrilled with how it turned out. </div></div></div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKZOE5HAelkOjsv6-5Qy8CMgXqUE9vmj9TcaK9i9qpChocBfMFRRjg9FaXeT1e-0xNVHptloInfhT86uFxItBa2VwmwLEI5044TnBscJiPufQrJteDPbYMzZKUINaxKaNFQ3H2q8XGP6Bd/s1920/Zam+Wesell+Costume.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1920" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKZOE5HAelkOjsv6-5Qy8CMgXqUE9vmj9TcaK9i9qpChocBfMFRRjg9FaXeT1e-0xNVHptloInfhT86uFxItBa2VwmwLEI5044TnBscJiPufQrJteDPbYMzZKUINaxKaNFQ3H2q8XGP6Bd/s16000/Zam+Wesell+Costume.jpg" /></a></div><div><br /></div>The leather belt on my dress form above is just a placeholder for the time being. I will be making a custom belt to hold up the skirt that will be hidden by the cummerbund on Zam's costume. The cummerbund and cowl/cape are my next pieces to work on. After that, it's time for armor! I'm really proud of how well this has all come together in just over a month. Stay tuned for my next update!<br /><div><br /></div>Savanna Oudithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04473574316101559927noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3142861747330012546.post-26146745094119013662021-03-22T12:57:00.003-07:002021-04-14T09:54:02.856-07:00The Clawdite Chronicles 3.22.21 - Fabric Selection, Making the Under Suit<p>It's been a few weeks since I received <a href="http://www.thedorkydiva.com/2021/03/my-zam-wesell-costume-build-begins.html">my Zam Wesell boots</a> and I've already made some good progress on the beginning steps of the costume, so I wanted to update you all with what I've done. Since I intend to document the full process of this build, I came up with a cute little series title for all of these posts- The Clawdite Chronicles! Each post will have the date in the title along with a brief summary of what I'm covering. </p><p>I hope this will be helpful to anyone who might be wanting to make their own Zam Wesell costume in the future. Once thing I've noticed during my many hours of online research is that there are very few photos and very little information from people who have built this costume. The Dented Helmet forums have quite a few threads of progress builds, but the pictures no longer load because they were hosted on Photobucket and that platform doesn't really work anymore.</p><p>Anyways, let's get into it!</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjngHKuCplHG_xtOF-Nc95N_Wa3OYS7Wlnj4iR_f1_Pud47FNADxODW2zQAwR_gPzkmXFIiQPQcZTl3BHyF2GQS-lMF5m6Z5v1kQ9QAvyWj5q4bwlRcTvkogThkMitzkQSLhdGe7WLRzw_Q/s1080/the+dorky+diva.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1080" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjngHKuCplHG_xtOF-Nc95N_Wa3OYS7Wlnj4iR_f1_Pud47FNADxODW2zQAwR_gPzkmXFIiQPQcZTl3BHyF2GQS-lMF5m6Z5v1kQ9QAvyWj5q4bwlRcTvkogThkMitzkQSLhdGe7WLRzw_Q/s16000/the+dorky+diva.jpg" /></a></div><p><br /></p><p><b>Creating a Build Plan</b></p><p>Between the fabric parts, leather goods, armored parts, and teeny tiny details, this costume has a LOT going on. I decided that it would be best to create a plan of attack so that I can focus on small chunks rather than being overwhelmed by the enormity of the project. <b>I created a spreadsheet</b> to list out everything on the costume and added fields to attach reference photos/links, any important notes that I need to remember, and a price for the item/materials so I can keep track of my overall cost. I also created a second tab on the spreadsheet just for the leather goods. Zam's costume consists of lots of leather parts that are all different varieties and weights. I made a list of what type of leather and how much square footage I need for each part. <b>I also created a database of all the reference photos</b> I could possibly find online.</p><p>My current plan is to <b>make the under suit </b>(long sleeve shirt and pants) first and <b>then the leather vest</b>. I am starting with these items because they are the base of the costume and I need these items done to start layering everything else (skirt, armor, etc) on top of it. After those items are done, I will make the leather belt and skirt, which I expect will take me probably a month to complete because it's a very tedious process. When all of those elements are complete, I will take a look at the armor parts and decide which of those I want to tackle first. I plan on buying my armored parts as raw cast pieces, so thankfully I don't need to worry about mold-making and everything, but I will need to assemble and paint them.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCYh8Sa5dBI7xRbcOTWAdFWYa8WyZ_XaQKq0W1YRyXQJ3XaC7GXLyl8BvrFiDZbw7AnZUdqGTkWkTKEsAiqsYbi5oaehVSLz2zpNqLCdIv8Ov4xVOIbTtxthX5_ikuyMs7ukDrQ8ZtPNYf/s2048/Zam+Wesell+Costume+%25281%2529.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1152" data-original-width="2048" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCYh8Sa5dBI7xRbcOTWAdFWYa8WyZ_XaQKq0W1YRyXQJ3XaC7GXLyl8BvrFiDZbw7AnZUdqGTkWkTKEsAiqsYbi5oaehVSLz2zpNqLCdIv8Ov4xVOIbTtxthX5_ikuyMs7ukDrQ8ZtPNYf/s16000/Zam+Wesell+Costume+%25281%2529.jpg" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p><p><b>Fabric Selection for the Under Suit</b></p><p>Now onto the under suit! Zam wears a long sleeve shirt and well-fitting pants underneath her armored parts. The screen-used costume had a custom made <b>neoprene suit in a lilac grey color</b>. This is oftentimes one of the more difficult pieces to source or make because the color is difficult to replicate. I was fully expecting to dye my own fabric, but I ended up getting very lucky and found a neoprene fabric online that was the exact color I needed. I ordered a sample piece first and couldn't believe how perfect the color looked in person. </p><p>I bought nine yards of this fabric, which is about three times more than I actually need, but I wanted to get an excess of fabric for a few reasons. My logic is that I will likely need to replace the under suit some day because the fabric might pill or who knows, my body might change and I could need to adjust the size of the suit. Since the neoprene is difficult to find, I will just put some extra material away for a rainy day if I ever need to make a new one. It wouldn't hurt to have a second pair of pants on hand in case one ripped or got stained at a convention- you never know what could happen. I also think I will use a few extra yards to make a cute Zam inspired dress. It's just such a beautiful color!</p><p><br /></p><p><b>Color Matching</b></p><p>Zam's entire costume looks like a different color in almost every reference photo I've found online. This could be due to the color temperature of lights, white balance on the camera, and just general aging of the costume itself. I've noticed that her leather vest and belt have seemed to fade over the years, so the costume displayed at exhibits looks much different than how it appeared on film in 2002. Since all of these colors are so different, I needed to decide on a color sample to replicate. I ended up choosing <a href="https://icolorpalette.com/color/pantone-5135-u"><b>Pantone 5135U</b></a> for the body suit color match. Everything else I make will be based off this color. Color matching will be something I talk about a lot in future blog posts, so stay tuned for more on this.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWOPXN1Iwvsq-F6CTJgTMGknbDKuOjlShTjCv0P-pc-qNrfTGvXKUl3k8GQpU6Sg335wJ2l8mieOh_SkIWcC74_sJMJYUq75pQc-n3Q_S2eKZ1wI7LgAiirtfLsS9ObtAIBSA9oyiNLn1P/s2048/2.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1152" data-original-width="2048" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWOPXN1Iwvsq-F6CTJgTMGknbDKuOjlShTjCv0P-pc-qNrfTGvXKUl3k8GQpU6Sg335wJ2l8mieOh_SkIWcC74_sJMJYUq75pQc-n3Q_S2eKZ1wI7LgAiirtfLsS9ObtAIBSA9oyiNLn1P/s16000/2.jpg" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p><p><b>Pattern Making and Sewing the Under Suit</b></p><p>While I waited for fabric to arrive, I picked up some stretch polyester material from Wal-Mart for less than $10 to start creating a pattern for the pants and shirt. I have sewn a few things over the years, but I'm definitely not a professional seamstress and I knew <b>I needed to make some prototypes</b> before cutting into the neoprene. I started with the pants because they intimidated me the most. I bought a <a href="https://www.simplicity.com/simplicity-storefront-catalog/patterns/women/athleisure/simplicity-pattern-8424-misses-knit-leggings-in-two-lengths-and-three-top-options/">Simplicity pattern (8424)</a> for $3 on Amazon to use as a start for the leggings. I used style B from this pattern and cut a size medium based on the measurements they provided. </p><p>Zam's pants have inner thigh panels that sort of resemble riding pants, but there is some detailed stitching along the seams that I am calling a <b>"bubble seam"</b> for lack of a better phrase. I have no idea if bubble seams are a real thing, but that's what I'm calling them because they quite literally look bubbled. </p><p>After cutting the pant legs, I also cut the inner thigh panels based on a guesstimate that I made. Her thigh panels hit just above her knee, so I used the knee line on the pattern to determine where I should cut these panels. It's very difficult to describe how I sewed these pants just through text alone, so let's just say that overall they turned out pretty well, but there was one big issue. The front thigh panels and the back thigh panels did not match up on the inside of each leg. Aside from that one big error, the panels fit pretty well overall the bubble seams turned out great.</p><p>I took the next week to think about this error and figure out a solution. In the meantime, I was looking at more reference photos and noticed a bubble seam on Zam's inner thigh that I hadn't included in my first pair of prototype pants. I went back to the drawing board. It took me a few hours to figure out how to include that seam and reconstruct the pants properly, but I finally got it right. I made a tiny doll-sized pair of pants to test my theory and got to work the next day making the second prototype. They took me five hours to make, but turned out beautifully! My first error was fixed, the additional bubble seam was included, and I figured out how to alter the pants to fit me perfectly. Success! I am really proud of how they turned out and glad I only needed to make two pairs to get it right.</p><p>As for the shirt, I took a long sleeve shirt that already fit me, created a pattern from it, and sewed a prototype in a couple hours. I need to make a couple small adjustments, but overall it turned out great. The shirt was much easier to make than the pants, so I plan on cutting my neoprene and making the real under suit next weekend.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiB4wbiKAcxvc6Qbm6c0Jo5HLOzkug3R-HtJtlkuqivjNKTHSQE1ZL2XLI_MzGQKegBDz9jPhIMjlKx9dFQNkKY2uYPhAwsr9PvHlAjGG2e8SkiGH2wSYKa1_nHhhsksC3Bly_NklPZbO-B/s2048/3.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1152" data-original-width="2048" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiB4wbiKAcxvc6Qbm6c0Jo5HLOzkug3R-HtJtlkuqivjNKTHSQE1ZL2XLI_MzGQKegBDz9jPhIMjlKx9dFQNkKY2uYPhAwsr9PvHlAjGG2e8SkiGH2wSYKa1_nHhhsksC3Bly_NklPZbO-B/s16000/3.jpg" /></a></div><p><br /></p><p><b>Leather Selection for the Vest</b></p><p>Now onto the vest. Zam's vest is made of lightweight lambskin leather that is laced together on the sides. I've never sewn leather before, but from everything I've read online, I think I can do this on my standard sewing machine since it's so thin. I only need 1-2 lambskin hides to make the vest, but I also need the same type of leather for her cummerbund/belt, so I ordered 4 hides lavender dyed lambskin that I found online. When it arrived, I opened the box in complete shock. The leather was bubble gum pink. They had sent me exactly what I ordered, but the color was definitely not photographed in correct lighting for their website. Thankfully I could return it and get a full refund, so it wasn't a total loss. After a little more research, I found another company that sold pre-dyed lambskin online and took a leap of faith. The hides arrived in the mail a few days ago and they are beautiful! Sometime in the next couple weeks I will start making a pattern for the vest and create a prototype before cutting the leather. I will need to airbrush the vest after it's sewn together to give it an aged, weathered look, but the base lilac color is a great starting point to add painted layers.</p><p><br /></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfunjy2cvJCYXQhiaDQzYuQ3VBSKywMb8B790P_GOxLOj18CT49fCdgP6uy3NQvGSxe0rb_9vxw-w-3Vx0V3NUit2Qw4JvSBhdZRPzxqJ62nF5xRW518CwrPhOqF_SQCFBEnZW1i4fJ8ad/s2048/Zam+Wesell+Costume.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1152" data-original-width="2048" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfunjy2cvJCYXQhiaDQzYuQ3VBSKywMb8B790P_GOxLOj18CT49fCdgP6uy3NQvGSxe0rb_9vxw-w-3Vx0V3NUit2Qw4JvSBhdZRPzxqJ62nF5xRW518CwrPhOqF_SQCFBEnZW1i4fJ8ad/s16000/Zam+Wesell+Costume.jpg" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p>That's all I've got for now! Slow, but steady progress has been made. I will post an update in a few weeks when the final under suit and vest are done. Then I will start on the leather skirt and focus on getting that done before moving on to the armor.</p>Savanna Oudithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04473574316101559927noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3142861747330012546.post-1414403400955121062021-03-12T07:51:00.000-08:002021-03-12T07:51:23.937-08:00Celestial Sisters: Edition 2<p>Celestial Sisters is back with a new collaboration with <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/CreatureCartel">Creature Cartel</a> and <a href="https://www.whimsydesignandillustration.com/">Whimsy Designs</a>! I have been so eager for the launch of this edition and I'm so happy the big day is finally here. After the success of our <a href="http://www.thedorkydiva.com/2020/09/celestial-sisters-edition-1.html">first Celestial Sisters drop</a>, Tori and I immediately started brainstorming on which characters we wanted to feature next. As huge fans of the Star Wars anthology films, we decided on Jyn Erso from Rogue One and Enfys Nest from Solo. <span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Lato; font-size: 16px;">Tori designed two amazing accessories while Alyssa and I teamed up to make two different designs for T-shirts, coffee mugs, and decals.</span></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7v8KmrTljKOWHePRS3qwiNqn6pNU2iRikcJ9DJ1lgMT8FOYxi44_jNY71kEo6i_tKWOZIoC-HWAZm0kIyLU99d7mahwTppQ7dMNgUOMktvV30n9bvVeFb8bYe2N7nIbUg_-QMRCnzDL1l/s2048/DSC_8534.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1366" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7v8KmrTljKOWHePRS3qwiNqn6pNU2iRikcJ9DJ1lgMT8FOYxi44_jNY71kEo6i_tKWOZIoC-HWAZm0kIyLU99d7mahwTppQ7dMNgUOMktvV30n9bvVeFb8bYe2N7nIbUg_-QMRCnzDL1l/s16000/DSC_8534.JPG" /></a></div><br /><p><b>Accessories.</b></p><p>Tori designed two stunning pieces that complement the shirts that Alyssa and I created. The <b><a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/978401713/cloud-rider-enfys-nest-fan-blade?ref=shop_home_active_1">Cloud Rider- Enfys Nest Inspired Hair Clip</a> </b>resembles the fanned beskar armor plates that adorn her gauntlets. The <b><a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/964446894/stardust-jyn-erso-inspired-death-star?ref=shop_home_active_2">Stardust- Jyn Erso Inspired Death Star Plans Necklace</a> </b>resemble just that, the iconic plans that helped save the galaxy and destroy the menacing space station that Jyn's father helped create.</p><p><br /></p><p><a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/CreatureCartel"></a></p><blockquote><a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/CreatureCartel">Click here to find the accessories at Creature Cartel</a></blockquote><p></p><p><br /></p><p><b>Apparel.</b></p><p>Unlike our first Celestial Sisters collaboration, I wanted this edition to feature iconic imagery that represents the characters other than their physical faces. For Enfys Nest, it felt like a no brainer to include the powerful helmet that once belonged to her mother. On the <b>Cloud Rider Tee</b>, Alyssa took my idea of including the mountains of Vandor in the background and inscribing the Aurebesh quote from her helmet around the T-shirt design. For Jyn Erso, I really wanted to memorialize her efforts on Scarif to retrieve the Death Star plans. I'm finally starting my Zam Wesell costume build! This cosplay has been a dream of mine for about eight years now and I can't believe I'm actually starting on it. I plan to document the entire build process here on The Dorky Diva, so let's start with what I've got so far. </p><p>Zam wears a very specific pair of Prada boots from the early 2000s that are insanely difficult to find these days. Not only are they tough to find, but they usually range from $500-$1,500 for a pair in decent condition if you are able to track them down. The most important part about the shoes are the soles. These iconic Vibram soles are visible on Zam's boot while the rest of the shoe is mostly covered by her shin armor and other details. While I could have found these soles a little easier than the entire screen-accurate boot, I <i>really </i>wanted the exact same pair that she wore in Attack of the Clones. </p><p>I got incredibly lucky this past week after many years of searching and found a pair of her exact boots in my size on Poshmark. They were listed at $269, I offered the seller $190, and she countered at $200, which I accepted immediately. The pair I bought was an old store display, so they had never been worn and they were the exact style/color that I needed for my costume. The seller even included the original box and dust bag, which will be cool to have as a special keepsake. </p><p>The boots are really stiff from not being worn at all and I have a hard time getting my foot in them. They are very comfortable once I get them on, but the shaft of the boot is actually too tight to zip up. I'm going to condition the leather and see if I can get them to stretch slightly at home. If I can't get them stretched enough, I'll see a cobbler to get them repaired to fit me perfectly. I'm still over the moon with excitement that I got them!</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVx82hxJDE18K1zoxPBAO9XRmmoK2PjGHc1jG0YjLTB2QdaFLRbOPLdOiW7c4JVWA5EA50ss82crv0642Z3Dx2oyVx0tBZw_GKhVZPQExz-gfZi1cGVHRidy3jTmvOtV8p97AcrRNfPQ4a/s1600/Twitter1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVx82hxJDE18K1zoxPBAO9XRmmoK2PjGHc1jG0YjLTB2QdaFLRbOPLdOiW7c4JVWA5EA50ss82crv0642Z3Dx2oyVx0tBZw_GKhVZPQExz-gfZi1cGVHRidy3jTmvOtV8p97AcrRNfPQ4a/s16000/Twitter1.jpg" /></a></div><br /><p>My plan is to get all of the soft parts sorted before I start on the leather details and armor parts. Zam's costume is very hard to color match, so I need to make sure that my under suit is finalized first. </p><p>I ordered two neoprene samples that should be delivered by the end of the week. I picked up a purple one that looks like a close match to the screen-used suit, but we'll see if it looks as good in person as it does online. I also ordered a white neoprene sample in the case that I need to dye the fabric myself. In addition to the neoprene, I went ahead and ordered suede samples for Zam's veil and cape/cowl. Once I receive these, I'll post an update on how they panned out and if they'll be a good match for my costume. Stay tuned for more!</p>Savanna Oudithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04473574316101559927noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3142861747330012546.post-60813481284908602212021-02-28T06:00:00.002-08:002021-02-28T06:00:05.395-08:00The Working Diva- Interview with Animation Producer, Caroline Kermel<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgx8DcMzw9cN3S8ABTbP9usad1gZH7JPGJIFeoh015kX1si92tUqXJ8Uc-_7DGTnPUKn1rYAUBWWrV3OhlZciIdJG-gu-Xq7-zVrZ-o8o1VTVB714tWL2-3QNcr4yyL6wfr8eMzLFMQIHg8/s2048/caroline_kermel.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1420" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgx8DcMzw9cN3S8ABTbP9usad1gZH7JPGJIFeoh015kX1si92tUqXJ8Uc-_7DGTnPUKn1rYAUBWWrV3OhlZciIdJG-gu-Xq7-zVrZ-o8o1VTVB714tWL2-3QNcr4yyL6wfr8eMzLFMQIHg8/s16000/caroline_kermel.jpg" /></a></div><p><br /></p><p>On today's episode, Savanna is joined by animation producer Caroline Kermel. After a year and a half of development, I'm over the moon with excitement to announce that The Adventures of the Zolan Dart is finally streaming on podcasting platforms. *shrieks*</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjX47OUskZ_Sx4b9vDWjRupCOw3UXnCBwBTG-HQ8eBOrSHQvvdmGIlM7glJLsDCCOd1xCGu8iIH084iieyT5WUbffoiUA4ajp5hCwptB5KAWrvmP5vQSEpulSKiGJdDWHx65qXpTvKbHC2s/s2048/SW+Square10.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="2048" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjX47OUskZ_Sx4b9vDWjRupCOw3UXnCBwBTG-HQ8eBOrSHQvvdmGIlM7glJLsDCCOd1xCGu8iIH084iieyT5WUbffoiUA4ajp5hCwptB5KAWrvmP5vQSEpulSKiGJdDWHx65qXpTvKbHC2s/s16000/SW+Square10.jpg" /></a></div><p><br /></p><p>In case you're new here and have no clue what I'm talking about, I'll catch you up to speed. In June of 2019, my friend Brian and I decided that we wanted to make a feature-length audio drama inspired by the Star Wars galaxy. Brian wrote the script and fine-tuned it with writer Victor Espinosa to tell the story of our main trio of characters. We were joined by sound designer Kristina Morss and an amazing cast of voice actors to bring the story of the Zolan Dart's crew to life. </p><p>You can stream the audio drama by subscribing to The Dorky Diva Show on your favorite podcasting app!</p><p><br />

What a fussy little thing you've been. This year has felt like an entire decade smashed into 366 horrific days (you already forgot it was a leap year, right?). Despite the rough days and the monotony of not leaving the house, I managed to stay positive for the majority of this year and wanted to remember the good things that happened over the last 12 months. We'll all remember the bad of 2020, so I'm going to commemorate the good. Let's do this! These are my favorite things that happened in 2020...</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8wWpZnv4U_2S6sWXwjyNUzzK3hI-YtUp5bt7zPS1mwlA0GPuxMPhlHtBQSZjni3Y1AaiGaWnsXmM6nzrsMJTka_KygPwIJ3KKp0h4m4k5yD0VxNL-j86c07VXoVk3P3J_EJPkZCJHsIPe/s1080/my+favorite+things+in+2020.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1080" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8wWpZnv4U_2S6sWXwjyNUzzK3hI-YtUp5bt7zPS1mwlA0GPuxMPhlHtBQSZjni3Y1AaiGaWnsXmM6nzrsMJTka_KygPwIJ3KKp0h4m4k5yD0VxNL-j86c07VXoVk3P3J_EJPkZCJHsIPe/s16000/my+favorite+things+in+2020.jpg" /></a></div><p><br /></p><p><b>New Music</b></p><p>Listening to good music has been a constant source of joy for me this year. On March 15th right at the beginning of my time in quarantine, <b>Donald Glover</b> released a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gezFLhUznSk">surprise album</a> on his website that was only live for 24 hours. It eventually made its way to a widespread release, but it was so exhilarating listening to this new album for the very first time. I remember the day it came out, I was working on a sewing project (<a href="http://www.thedorkydiva.com/2020/03/yellow-floral-wrap-top.html">this top actually</a>) and it was so fun jamming out to the songs when I was ironing fabric and sewing all day. My favorite track is definitely Beautiful (also named 19.10). Then on July 24th, <b>Taylor Swift</b> totally shocked us all with a surprise album titled Folklore. This album was really different from her past work and I immediately loved everything about it. The stories she told throughout the songs were fun to research and break down. After weeks and weeks of listening to Folklore, I still have to say that Invisible String is my favorite track. In early December, Taylor totally shocked us AGAIN with another new album- a companion to Folklore titled Evermore. This album is still pretty new and I'm discovering things about it each day, but for now I think my favorite track is either Ivy or Willow.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5DJkmlx81pa1v6l5_OxxB-3xf47fqhiKJo-vVNizbXD4bc2w7KuWvp2PxYtqTDNlA_NYIUoPAF84B568ua6-mL2CAC6e_QRydqaZSUIMJt-PqrPZhyUAuCFAmRN-grHJunesgaTVkRUBz/s620/FSSHTBA4FBDBTFMVJ6URM5F66I.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="454" data-original-width="620" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5DJkmlx81pa1v6l5_OxxB-3xf47fqhiKJo-vVNizbXD4bc2w7KuWvp2PxYtqTDNlA_NYIUoPAF84B568ua6-mL2CAC6e_QRydqaZSUIMJt-PqrPZhyUAuCFAmRN-grHJunesgaTVkRUBz/s16000/FSSHTBA4FBDBTFMVJ6URM5F66I.jpg" /></a></div><p><br /></p><p><b>Somebody Feed Phil</b></p><p>Pasta, pork, chicken, and laaaaaamb! If you know, you know. If you <i>don't</i><i style="font-weight: bold;"> </i>know, then let me tell you about this lovely show. Somebody Feed Phil is easily the greatest thing I watched all year long on Netflix. This food travel show is hosted by <b>Phil Rosenthal</b>, the creator of Everybody Loves Raymond. There are four seasons available to watch on Netflix where Phil visits a new city during each episode to try their renowned foods and meet the locals who create these dishes. I wish I could find the words to really express how much I love this show, but if I could describe it with one word, I would choose <b>delightful</b>. Phil seems like such a sweet and caring person. He has a great on-camera personality and really seems to love meeting people all over the world. Every episode leaves me beaming from ear to ear! If you haven't watched it yet, put this at the very top of your watch list. You won't be disappointed. I hope it's safe to travel again soon so we can get closer to another season of Somebody Feed Phil.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9C8Sb_Z_rpE843NcR5RiIrn82ExU9bS1sJolDXSsPBnSPKVXBS3dGwb25sTuQB3Bz6a30ktkorqCTEv9GbIgrD0QY9vOnF3XlgZneK47NH8XV86mYI4pv1M8uT4mFKOSHnqP5zsS_8D6b/s1502/SomebodyFeedPhil_Season4_Rio-de-Janeiro_00_01_10_06.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1079" data-original-width="1502" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9C8Sb_Z_rpE843NcR5RiIrn82ExU9bS1sJolDXSsPBnSPKVXBS3dGwb25sTuQB3Bz6a30ktkorqCTEv9GbIgrD0QY9vOnF3XlgZneK47NH8XV86mYI4pv1M8uT4mFKOSHnqP5zsS_8D6b/s16000/SomebodyFeedPhil_Season4_Rio-de-Janeiro_00_01_10_06.jpg" /></a></div><p><br /></p><p><b>Rediscovering The Lord of the Rings</b></p><p>Ah, the misty mountains. I'm one of those people that had never seen The Lord of the Rings trilogy until after the Hobbit films were released in theaters. After seeing the first Hobbit movie during opening week in 2012, I hunkered down for a weekend and watched the entirety of The Lord of the Rings. While I enjoyed the movies at the time, I have to admit I never watched them again...until this year! My husband has both the Hobbit and LOTR extended trilogies on Blu-Ray so we cracked them open in May for a full re-watch. Well, our <i>first</i> re-watch. After going through each trilogy and watching alllllll of the behind the scenes material, we ended up watching them two or three more times. I'm really glad we took the time to watch the movies again because it made me fall in love with them. I even decided to read The Hobbit book for the first time and enjoyed every page. Watching all of the bonus content and seeing how these movies were painstakingly made gave me even more appreciation for everyone who made the stories come to life on screen.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCQAo8eOUUzLb-u-6QFtka5BFO1dRXcyhlWdAS9cIGMomPA7xONMaY2LlDH4u2-IuAqYysNN33VjH03Gpc2Z97j3vpzew8uUqnyvR7KQ_MPQHgCsvRluTMjD2BLOWnBlyNPQeZOMgvbOR8/s1000/resized_150246-flashback0612-0612-rgb_57-29702.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="657" data-original-width="1000" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCQAo8eOUUzLb-u-6QFtka5BFO1dRXcyhlWdAS9cIGMomPA7xONMaY2LlDH4u2-IuAqYysNN33VjH03Gpc2Z97j3vpzew8uUqnyvR7KQ_MPQHgCsvRluTMjD2BLOWnBlyNPQeZOMgvbOR8/s16000/resized_150246-flashback0612-0612-rgb_57-29702.jpg" /></a></div><p><br /></p><p><b>Loungewear</b></p><p>Let's be real- uncomfortable clothes are stupid. I've been working from home for almost three years now and I wear leggings or sweatpants every single day so the current trend of loungewear is not really anything new in my life. However, I am loving all of the new loungewear options now that companies are catering to folks working from home. The sweater I'm wearing below was designed by one of my sweet friends <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/CaiterBugStudios">Caitlin who is an incredible artist</a>. She just released her very first apparel piece this year and I was so thrilled that it was a sweatshirt! I also picked up some <a href="https://www.ae.com/us/en/p/aerie/bottoms/joggers-sweatpants/aerie-new-love-corded-jogger/0701_7603_649?ip=off&cid=PLA_Aerie_Brand_Womens_Bottoms&gclid=Cj0KCQiA2uH-BRCCARIsAEeef3n8l9gnaoJJ3m-RqIEq_y_kCuxVI-J6_NJtPEouRVHViiGoWsMaykAaAm6CEALw_wcB">corded joggers from Aerie</a> that are super cozy and comfortable to wear. Getting dressed up on the rare occasion that I leave the house is exciting, but I am always so happy to put on the biggest, comfiest sweats when I get home.</p><p><br /></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiV_Ukp-iv9zqseStjcLkl90TR1ITmlxJN3jQDE2MmRR2GXmOYNPtCx0j4yzhuPqyLkXc9KCSSPkKv_3mjnNBQezjErVsc_B9td9jsLl5cixqCO6rcdXz_UBED7XmVSBDgh7Fxfv_ImOuy-/s2048/DSC_8119.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="2048" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiV_Ukp-iv9zqseStjcLkl90TR1ITmlxJN3jQDE2MmRR2GXmOYNPtCx0j4yzhuPqyLkXc9KCSSPkKv_3mjnNBQezjErVsc_B9td9jsLl5cixqCO6rcdXz_UBED7XmVSBDgh7Fxfv_ImOuy-/s16000/DSC_8119.jpg" /></a></div><br /><b><br /></b><p></p><p><b>Hamilton on Disney+</b></p><p>WORK! Hamilton swept the nation five years ago, but until this year I still hadn't seen or heard any of the musical. I was really excited this summer when Disney+ announced that Hamilton would be streaming on their platform starting July 3rd. My husband is a huge history buff, so we watched it together and both really enjoyed it. I still listen to the soundtrack on occasion and it gets me so pumped up! I'm really glad that Disney was able to stream this performance for all of their subscribers because it brings broadway to millions of people who otherwise would never get to see the show.</p><p><br /></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVRfaid7B6zawLRy1i8RF7YsmdDvxXWhB16_QO0ZFPcElDJq2kRVEsbuuMpXLYlWWzA8Tbf6tu_p6n8yoWf-Pbsul1n8N0A7LEBMxPbTgaGF8edLPNWOl0u2HGW2a6tHyr5tQ6nMrQhipe/s2048/Screen+Shot+2020-12-15+at+8.54.53+AM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1147" data-original-width="2048" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVRfaid7B6zawLRy1i8RF7YsmdDvxXWhB16_QO0ZFPcElDJq2kRVEsbuuMpXLYlWWzA8Tbf6tu_p6n8yoWf-Pbsul1n8N0A7LEBMxPbTgaGF8edLPNWOl0u2HGW2a6tHyr5tQ6nMrQhipe/s16000/Screen+Shot+2020-12-15+at+8.54.53+AM.png" /></a></div><p></p><p><b><br /></b></p><p><b>Elopements and Backyard Weddings</b></p><p>I know 2020 has completely destroyed the plans and dreams of many brides, so this probably isn't a highlight for them, but as someone who had a <a href="http://www.thedorkydiva.com/2018/09/from-ms-to-mrs.html">small wedding back in 2018</a>, I've been enjoying seeing several friends get married in their backyards this year and elope. I really loved having an intimate ceremony (literally just myself, my husband, and our parents were present) and I think it's a great way to get married if you're not focused on having a giant party. Shout out to my friends <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CGnUeD6nicd/">Sarah</a> and <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CG-6Si-Bonj/">Alex</a> who got married this year! They are both planning to have big weddings when it's safe to gather again, but I'm filled with so much joy to see them get married this year despite all of the new challenges. The cuties below are Sarah and her new husband Patrick.
